We learned of Ava's Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia when she was only twenty weeks gestation. They told us that her diaphragm (the thin muscle that seperates her lungs from her organs) was missing. Her stomach, large and small intestines, spleen and part of her liver had pushed it's way up through the opening, moving her heart to the left and leaving very little room for her left lung. They told us that 50% of these babies die no matter how much help they give them at birth. Ava was considered severe so her chances were only 20%-30%. They gave us the option to terminate the pregnancy. I just couldn't do it. I knew God had a reason, a purpose.
