Is the Moon moving away from the Earth?
Question posed by Robin The Moon is currently 384467 km away from the Earth, and measurements show that this distance is increasing by about 3.8 cm every year. How do we know? The distance from the Earth to the Moon is currently measured by bouncing laser light off special reflectors that were left there by astronauts on the Apollo 11, 14 and 15 lunar missions. We know how fast laser light travels
Will the planets align in 2012?
Question posed by Karenna The planets are not due for an alignment in 2012. Take a look at the picture above (nabbed from http://www.astro.uu.nl/~strous/AA/en/index.html). That's an image of the projected positions of the Sun, Moon and planets on 21st Dec 2012 as seen from Earth. It might be slightly hard to get your head round exactly what the image is telling you, but one thing that's ob
Meteor hunters: Leonids on show!
Just a heads-up for meteor fans: The Leonid meteor shower is in full swing, and peaks tonight (Tuesday 17th November). The display will tail off over the next few days. The Leonids are so-called because they appear to radiate across the sky from a point in the constellation Leo and are fragments from the tail of comet 55 P/Tempel-Tuttle which last visited the vicinity of the Earth in 1998. Question posed by Aimee. Some stars towards the end of their lives go supernova. Supernovas can be seen by us as a brightening of a star over a few days or weeks, followed by a gradual fading of the star's brightness over a matter of months or years. Seen through a telescope, supernovas may be even more impressive, w
Why is water on the Moon such a big deal?
In October 2009, NASA performed an experiment on the Moon. This experiment involved deliberately crashing  a 2,200kg Centaur rocket stage into Cabeus, a 100km diameter crater close to the Moon's south pole. This crater was chosen because it is permanently in shadow, and this protection from the Sun's rays meant that there was a possibility of  water being stored there in the form of ice. The collision was designed to send up
