Always Looking Outside
"I am always looking outside, trying to look inside, trying to say something that is true. But maybe nothing is really true. Except what's out there. And what's out there is constantly changing." Robert Frank, 1985I've become quite obsessed with and inspired by the work of Robert Frank lately. I recently shared some of it here when I blogged about an exhibit of his work at a Chelsea gallery. This weekend I went to a show of his work from
Making Sounds
When I was in the middle of my professional crisis, trying to decide whether I should I leave my corporate job in my old life, I had a terrible time sleeping. In fact, that's an understatement...I rarely slept. I would get into bed because I was physically exhausted and my head was pounding but I would just lie there watching the shadows dancing on my ceiling and listening to the lull of the occasional traffic on the street below. Meet Me at the Equinox
The wait is over! The countdown clock is at: 0 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes, 0 seconds. The Twilight Saga: New Moon is here! I am going to see it this morning at the 11am showing at one of the many movie theaters in Manhattan. They're actually showing it every hour and we bought our tickets a few weeks ago. The stars have been featured all over the place and I'm not feeling the over-exposure yet...especially when one of the many features is in one of my favorite magazines, Harper's Bazaar and the photographer of the stars
Lost and Found
Lost in Translation is by far one of my favorite films. There was nothing on the other night and I suggested to my husband that we watch the dvd again. I love how the story just sneaks up on you. It's about barriers of language, age, relationships, culture, and education and the title hints at the theme of barriers, and it obviously serves as a description of the situation at hand—two Americans who only speak English in Tokyo. Writer/director Sofia Coppola is getting at something deeper with the title, though, and it's that somewhere along the way, these two people's dreams have been lost in life's expectations.
