What a difference a preposition makes!
So often we hear that to be really spiritual, we’re supposed to be thankful for all the unpleasant things that might befall us. “My back’s killing me since I fell down the stairs, but I’m thankful for it.” “Oh, my daughter has come down with H1N1 and have to stay home from work. I have a critical deadline, and I don’t think that I can make it… but I’m thankful for all this.”

“Thanks” needs an object
We say and hear it all the time — “Boy, I’m thankful I didn’t get the pink slip,” or “Thankfully my souffle didn’t fall.” To be thankful means that we have gratitude that is directed at somebody. To say, “I’m happy that I didn’t get the pink slip” is another matter. You are stating that you have have a sense of wellbeing. But to be thankful implies the presence of somebody else who has been benevolent, kind, or generous.
So on Thanksgiving I stop to remember that everything that I have is from the hand of my Father, even every breath. I pause to remember things like this from Ephes
