I’ve been asked to discuss my SFGate.com column about Michael Vick and what he did to his dogs on the radio show Live from the Left Coast with Angie Coiro — I guested, along with Marion Nestle, on her show about the most recent Nutro pet food recalls earlier this year — this evening at around 6:40 PM Pacific Time. Thoughts on food as an emotional drug
Around six and a half years ago, I said goodbye to sugar, white flour, potatoes, pasta, rice another other starchy, sugary foods. Over the next four years I also said goodbye to 187 pounds. When I started menopause just under two years ago, first 4 and then 7 of those pounds kept trying to come back. I'd starve them off, and a day or two later they'd return. I experimented with a thousand things -- more exercise, different exercise, strict calorie counting, portion control, attitude adjustment... no matter what I tried, the result was the same: I'd gained 7 pounds that I could lose, but not keep off -- even if I didn't alter a single thing I was eating or doing. Crossposted at Pet Connection. On September 18, 2009, at 11:19 PM, my mother, Kathleen McKenzie passed away after a long battle with metatastic breast cancer. The last months of her life were far from peaceful, and she suffered a great deal. That suffering was compounded when, on August 7, we lost our last deerhound, Rebel, at the age of 10 and a half. It was the first time in nearly 30 years we’d been without a Scottish Deerhound, and my mom was bereft. On Tuesday, September 8, she received some very special visitors. Cecilia Arnold of Gwent Scottish Deerhounds, who bred our very first deerhound, Tim, paid her a visit with two of Timmy’s distant relatives in tow. That visit was the def
