IYA Special Edition – Crab Nebula
New episode every Monday! What does it mean? Supernova – The explosion of a star near the end of its lifetime, as it runs out of nuclear fuel in its core. Only massive stars can become supernovae. Supernova explosions are so bright they can be easily observed in other galaxies. Pulsar – is a spinning neutron star with a very strong magnetic field, which emits a beam of electromagnetic radia
Eposode 59: Neutron stars and pulsars
New episode every Monday! What does it mean? Neutron star – is the collapsed core, made up mostly of neutrons, of a supermassive star that was not large enough to form a black hole. It has a very small size ( a diameter about the same size as a small city) but a very large mass (at least 1.4 times the mass of our Sun). Pulsar – is a spinning neutron star with a very strong magnetic field, wh
Eposode 58: Supergiants
New episode every Monday! What does it mean? Main sequence stars – are the ones that are actively fusing hydrogen into helium in their cores. Their inward gravitational force due to the mass of the star is balanced by the outward thermal pressure generated by nuclear fusion. Supergiant (star) – is the most massive type of star. A supergiant may have a mass between 10 and 70 times that of the
Eposode 57: The birth of stars – Part 2
New episode every Monday! What does it mean? Potential energy – The energy that is stored in objects due to is position in a force field. For example, the atoms in a molecular cloud have gravitational potential energy that is turned into heat energy, which is just the energy of the random motions of the particles as the cloud collapses towards its gravitational center. Ionized – is the term
IYA Special Edition – Andromeda
New episode every Monday! Is that all? Fact Sheet: Andromeda Location: Andromeda constellation. Distance from Earth: 2.5 million light-years. Mass: 7.1 x 1011 Solar masses. Diameter:
