Engineer Builds $10 DIY Cellphone Microscope [Microscopes]
Cellphones are handy in a pinch. They make emergency calls, serve as a late night texting platform, and now in developing areas where money is tight and malaria runs rampant, they can serve as a microscope. The DIY design is the brainchild of Aydogan Ozcan, an assistant professor of electrical engineering and member of the California NanoSystems Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. He did it all with some software he wrote and about $10 in off-the-shelf parts.
Anyone Have a Spare $10 Million Racing Yacht Mast Lying Around? [Sailing]
A quick glimpse into the life of a software billionaire: When Larry Ellison's BMW Oracle Racing yacht snapped its $10 million mast this week, the ship's helmsman (not Ellison) described the event as a "minor setback." That's $10 million for a mast. Granted, it's part of
Verizon Wireless Launches Three More Anti-AT&T 3G Network Commercials [Verizon Wireless]
Today Verizon responded to AT&T's "There's a Map For That" commercials lawsuit by releasing a slew of new commercials with similar themes and messaging. The battle continues, this time on the infamous Island of Misfit Toys. The first commercial, which I saw air for the first time during the New England Patriots game this afternoon, is called Verizon Blue Christmas (above). The second commercial, below, shows us that the "naughty" people won't be getting coal in their stocking
With SoundRacer, Your Kia Can Fake It With the Best of Them [Poseurs]
Poseurs rejoice, your faux V8 and V10 engine sounds are here. Our eyes sufficiently rolled, we can continue. The video is a demo of SoundRacer, which promises to sync up with your car's actual RPMs and engine sounds and mask them—via your speakers—with the engine sounds of real V8 and V10-powered vehicles. Sure, it's the tinfoil-wrapped cucumber in the jeans of the auto tuning community, but I'll be damned if
SNEGENES P Combo Mod Comes with Plenty of Junk in the Trunk [Hacks]
From the front this threesome looks pretty hot. Clear case with bright LEDs, original SNES buttons, and the ability to play three great systems on to go. All great. But what's going on in the back? A lot, apparently. To actually play games on this SNEGENES P portable, you have to jam actual cartridges into the back of the portable.
