My new language
Lingua retail There are two schools of advice with regard to learning a new language. The blank slate where you let your mind go blank and let the new language rewrite your brain. The other is where you associate the new words with things which are already familiar. I have an associative brain filled with tons of useless knowledge. There’s no way a blank slate will work for me. You say “salt”, I say “pepper.” It goes on from there next thing I’m thinking about Salt and Pepa and then thinking “Push it, push it real good.” So now that I’m a bookseller, I’m attempting to learn a new language after ye
Think I’ll keep the name
Neither likely to happen I took the name “Greatness of Homelessness at a time when I was really stressed out. As I look back at it now, I was putting too much of my emotional self into my business. Not that I was expecting to be detached but it was a heavy emotional investment. I was so stressed at the time that I even spelled the name wrong when I registered the url. My family jokes about my inability to spell but in this case it was stress and not the usual stupidity. Rather than go back and re-register, I decided to hang onto it as a reminder of that time. Additionally, I’m not likely to end up homeless nor do I see greatness in my future. T
The paint is dry
Inventory Taking part in retail inventory is about as exciting as watching paint dry. Today was inventory day at the bookstore. The “Borg” arrived at 8am and began the process of counting each book and item in the store. The Borg were dressed in black pants and maroon shirts with comfortable shoes. Each had a scanner attached to his/her left hand which flashed a red laser at the ISBN, followed by a beep and a green light. Connected to the scanner was a key board and monitor that attached to the right side of each individual. Each drone would point his/her l
Lots of gray heads around
Gray heads I had lunch with a coworker today. We both commented about the number of gray heads on staff. She said she expected to see far more college students and recent graduates. She said she was surprised that there were as many of use as there were young folks. She went on to say that she had heard that the actual unemployment rate when you figure in folks like us and those who have given up is over 17%. She had just heard it on the radio. As I was driving in this morning, they were announcing that the employment numbers were due out and expected to reach double digits. While driving home, I heard that they had reached 10.2% Earlier in the week another
Gearing up/Winding Down
Gearing up I have begun my second week in my part-time job at Barnes and Noble. It is a new store and we have been stocking the store getting ready for our grand opening on November 18, 2009. It really has been a great experience for me. Tiring but a great experience. I find I’m in better shape than many of the folks who are half my age. I’m not complaining much about the aches and pains of lifting and bending. Building out the store is a great bonding and learning experience. I’m learning coworkers names and learning how we work together. At the same time, I am seeing a lot of titles of interest. I should really be able to satisfy my reading appe
