What’s on the bookshelf: ‘The Demon’s Lexicon’
Although, I didn’t find the bulk of the novel as a whole extraordinary in the telling, I did find Sarah Rees Brennan’s “The Demon’s Lexicon” enjoyable. Alan Ryves has all the heart and soul and is wicked with a gun, and his younger brother, Nick Ryves, has a hard time connecting with anyone or anyth

What’s on the bookshelf: Don’t judge an editor by…
…His/her price tag. Yep, that’s right. Just like you cannot judge a book by its cover, you shouldn’t judge an editor by how much he/she charges. In fact, I have seen a lot of comments here and there actually saying “expect to pay X price or the editor isn’t any good.” Here is why I [...]

What’s on the Bookshelf: The Host
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I am not a Stephenie Meyer fan. There isn’t a shred of doubt in my mind to that fact after reading “The Host.” I thought it might just be a “Twilight” aversion, which is why I waited so long to read it. More than once, I [...]

What’s on the Bookshelf: ‘Frost’
The very name of Kate Avery Ellison’s “Frost” makes me shiver. Her newest novella — just shy of novel length at 47,000 words — paints a cold, icy world full of monsters that haunt the darkness. The very culture of the Frost’s inhabitants consists of engrained, almost ritualistic behaviors that prote

What’s on the Bookshelf: Chapter length
I’ve never been a fan of long chapters, but I am a fan of chapters having their own arc and accomplishing something specific in the storytelling. So, I’ve always tried to focus on the storytelling rather than the chapter length when I write. That approach has always worked for me in the past. Howeve

What’s on the Bookshelf: ‘How to Date an Alien’
Alien life does exist, or at least that’s what Alex discovers when she travels to Arizona to intern for the summer at Circe. Part “Men In Black,” part high school romance, “How to Date an Alien” by Magan Vernon is a quirky young adult comedy. It was an enjoyable read, but I have my pros [...]

What’s on the Bookshelf: ‘Return to Eden’
Every once and awhile, I find an author that I can pick up his or her books (or open my e-reader as the case may be) and read them until the pages fall apart—literally and figuratively. It’s fortunate that the Soulkeepers Series by G.P. Ching is in digital format, or I would have burned through [...

Cover Reveal: Inbetween by Tara Fuller
INBETWEEN (Kissed by Death, #1) by Tara Fuller (August 7, 2012) Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky—and unending—lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taki
