What will replace the hardworking Caribou?
The Australia defence force is retiring one of its long standing work horses this year. 38 Squadron says good-bye to the Caribou after 45 years of hard work. A recent ABC story on Caribou was a nostalgic look at its introduction in 1964.
Our ground handler in Townsville, Charlie, was a flight engineer on the Caribou and he recently joined 2000 ex-aircrew to farewell the mighty aircraft. The Caribou has been used extensively in humanitarian operations as well as supporting troops. Its short field capabilities are awesome.

Dominic James did a sterling job today ditching his Westwind jet off Norfolk Island. The ABC story at http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/11/19/2747466.htm makes interesting reading.
That he happens to be one of Cleo magazine’s top 50 eligible bachelors is academic. It’s his ability to work his way through an emergency and come up with a good outcome. Sometimes weather conditions change so rapidly that pilot’s can be caught out. Good training goes a long way to mitigating these things.
