Humanitas Remedium

Information

Blog Name: Humanitas Remedium
Url: http://humanitasremedium.wordpress.com/
Language: English
Topics: philosophical, political, theological
Description: theological, philosophical & political commentary on culture, the Divine and the relationship between them. The phrase “humanitas remedium,” is a Latin term meaning Humanity or Culture remedy. The human condition is in need of a deep and lasting remedy. To that end I hope to use this blog as a forum to discuss that remedy, the problem(s) of humanity and all of its trappings by engaging in a thoughtful critique of the world around us through a conversation dealing with theology, philosophy, politics and the greater culture at large. To spoil the ending a bit, I want everyone to know up front that the remedy to all the problems of humanity are found in Jesus Christ. He is the justice this world craves and so much more. I plan to conduct this conversation in a number of ways, which are but not limited to; Posting quotations to consider. Posting book reviews. Posting short argumentative essays I have written on different topics. Posting the Lecture of the week, which will be posted every Monday, the lectures will be on various topics and themes and will be available for download.

More Gold From Pascal
Last week I posted some one liners from Pascal. Here are some more quotations from “Human Happiness,” By Baise Pascal. I found his wisdom and understanding of the human condition so helpful. “Reason never wholly overcomes imagination, while the contrary is quite common.” “If our condition were truly happy we should not need to divert ourselves from thinking about it.” “What causes inconstancy is the realization that present pleasures are false, together with the failure to realize that absent pleasures are vain.” “Of true Justice. We no longer have any. If we had, we should not accept it as a rule of justice that o
PRECIOUS REMEDIES AGAINST SATAN’S DEVICES; Device #3 and its Remedies
As promised here is the next device that Satan uses to fool the saints and it’s remedies from Thomas Brooks work, “PRECIOUS REMEDIES AGAINST SATAN’S DEVICES”: Device #3: By the extenuating and lessening of sin. Remedies: 1) sin which men account small brings God’s great wrath on men. 2) the giving way to a less sin makes way for the committing of a greater. 3) it is sad to stand with God for a trifle. 4) often there is most danger in the smallest sins. 5) the saints have chosen to suffer greatly rather than commit the least sin. 6) the soul can never stand
Lecture of the Week; Ravi Zacharias On Theism and Atheism: Points of Tension
This week’s lecture comes to us from the veritas forum that was held at the University of Indiana. The lecturer is Ravi Zacharias and his topic is Theism and Atheism: Points of Tension. I found this to be one of the best discussions of the the two worldviews and there ramifications. Additionally, the Q&A at the end is very helpful. Click here to listen or download.
Three Points of Interest
Ray Ortlund has some great thoughts on Freedom from self-preservation. Paul David Tripp explains What’s Wrong with the World. Tullian Tchividjian offers thoughts and a list of books to help in the Unriddling Our Times.
One Line Gold or Why You Should Read Pascal
I have these ever growing piles of books to work my way when I get out of school in December, one theology, one of everything else. As I have just gotten some time back due to having taken the GRE last Friday, I started the book at the top of the “everything else” pile was “Human Happiness” by Blaise Pascal. I started reading and have come across some great one liners. Enjoy:
