The more things change...
Earlier today, a reader sent me an interesting video clip of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-Hell) talking about national health care legislation in 1973. Unfortunately I can't embed the video here, but you can see it for yourself on a USC library website. My reader said the clip had Thurmond endorsing a public health insurance option, and he does lean that way just a bit in calling for a government-run program for the neediest Americans. But in researching the legislation Thurmond was promoting - "Medicredit" - I found that it was an AMA-sponsored bill primarily aimed at hea
McLeod Releases Jobs Plan
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mullins McLeod has released his plan for creating jobs through a combination of tax cuts, small business assistance, renewed focus on recruiting and creating green jobs - and removing the Confederate flag from the State House grounds. “The Confederate flag debate continues to hold our state back. We are not going to compete in a 21st Century economy by prolonging 19th Century arguments. By agreeing to move past this old argument o
The Quotable Joe Wilson
After his outburst in September, we all know Rep Joe Wilson marches to the beat of a different drummer--just under 65% of people in a recent poll said they opposed his actions that faithful night.  That begs the question, who is Joe Wilson listening to?  As first reported by the New York Times, in last week's debate on health care reform, Wilson along with a handful of Republicans and conservative Democrats took a page, literally, from the health care interests that have padded their campaign coffers for years. Wilson, and the tr

By Brad Hutto For five years I have witnessed Jim DeMint march further and further out of the mainstream of South Carolina values and American values. I've seen his stance against life-saving health care research and science. I've been frustrated by his blissful ignorance of the real health care challenges South Carolina families face. But most importantly, I've watched someone who is supposed to represent us, instead vote for legislation that has destroyed jobs here at home and created jobs in Mexico and China. This has to end. I will not be challenging Sen. DeMint and his far right-wing friends in Washington this coming election year, but I will be supporting Chad Mc
Meeting the Candidates for Governor in Charleston
The Charleston County and South Carolina State Democratic Parties held a meet the Candidates reception in Charleston on Thursday, Nov. 12 which was attended by about 75 paying guests.   A minimum contribution of Fifty Dollars was asked to help cover overhead for a State party organization now operating a full time, staffed office with increasingly important IT and training operations. It should be noted many young Democrats attended and were welcomed as event volunteers and didn’t pay
