Beyond Belief
I watched a beautiful documentary last night called Beyond Belief about two American women, Patti Quigley and Susan Retik, who lost their husbands in the 9/11 bombings. Instead of allowing their grief and hatred to consume them, they co-founded a nonprofit called Beyond the 11th, which “provides support to widows in Afghanistan who have been affected by war, terrorism, and oppression.”
At one point in the film the two women travel to Afghanistan to meet the women who their grants were helping. What struck me was how distant my preconceptions of these women were from
Softened Criminals
Puppies Behind Bars is a nonprofit organization that teaches prisoners (some violent offenders) how to train service dogs. The dogs spend 24 hours a day for 12-18 months with their assigned trainer, sleeping in a crate in the trainer’s cell. The prisoners’ stories and their transformations as a result of participating in the program are incredibly inspiring.
