More on the Proposed Huge Wisconsin CAFO
I wrote a friend in Wisconsin, asking for more information on the proposed enormous dairy in Rosendale. Here's what he had to say (below). If you live in Wisconsin and you want to do something about this, please write a letter to the Governor and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same. The Rosendale Dairy has been a HUGE controversy for sometime since it would be the largest factory dairy farm east of the Mississippi (8000+ cows), producing as much sewage as the entire city of Janesville, WI.
There is more background material on Rosendale and the general anti-factory farm fight in WI on our w
Drinking New Jersey, Part II
Screw "the rules". Let's start Monday off with a drink! Or at least, talking about drinks. Specifically, most (but not all, I sometimes forget to take notes and sometimes forget that I should take notes and sometimes even forget that I'm forgetting to take notes...) of the local craft brews I had while back in Jersey last month.
Over the nine days I spent in October back in the state in which I was born and raised, I drank beers high and low. I drank 'em in Lambertville, and I drank 'em in South Orange. I drank 'em in Woodbridge, and I drank 'em in New Brunswick. I drank 'em in Long Valley. I even drank 'em down in Philly and out in NYC. &
Environmentally Disastrous CAFO? Great Idea!
The WI Dept of Natural Resources found that a new 11,5000 cow dairy would be an environmental disaster... and approved it anyway. Yikes! What to do? Details below. The following is from a post on DailyKos:
This dairy CAFO, in the Town of Rosendale, we call it CAFO-RD, asked for a permit to Confine 11,500 Animal Units. The WDNR wrote an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) telling everyone why this CAFO wasn't a good idea. The 197 page EIS points to issues like the 127 species of birds, invertebrates, and suchlike that could be harmed in nearby grasslands,
American Beverage Association Lobbying
The American Beverage Association spent a total of $7,550,000 on lobbying during the Third Quarter of 2009, making them the #2 top spender on lobbying during that time period. Who is the ABA, who is lobbying on their behalf, and what are they lobbying for (or against)? Join me below for details... ABA represents the interests of Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Kraft Foods, and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group. They spent $7,330,000 on in-house lobbying during Q309. During that time period, they also paid a number of lobbying agencies to lobby on their behalf:
Bockorny Group, Inc. - $90,000
Heather Podesta + Partners, LLC - $80,000
O'Neill and Associates - $10,
