Write the Rain Prompt
Here is a great prompt for memoir or any other writing from another site
1. Think about one time in your life that you’d like to write about. Be as specific as possible — starting a new job, getting divorced, your 12th birthday party, the death of your mother.
2. Now think of the events of the day or the time as if they were rain. What kind of rain? It could be a warm, welcoming rain. It could be a cold, stormy rain. How do you cope with the rain? How do you feel at the beginning when the rain is just starting? What about at the end?
3. Now write 500 words (or more). Perhaps you’ll find your own internal weather signs.
Until next time,
Blogging a Memoir
Some people are blogging their memoirs and I am not sure I like the idea. It certainly gives you plenty to blog about but will others be interested in your history? And what about publishing? If you are hoping to be published, aren’t you giving it all away? What will be left to read and why would someone buy your book when they can, or already have, read it for nothing. I would love to hear some comments on this dilemma.
Truth in Memoir
One of the most difficult things in memoir writing is making decisions about how much truth you can tell comfortably. What if you have information that can hurt someone, emotionally or in the eye of the public and you feel the need to purge this from your being. How far are you willing to go? How far should you go? Are there any rules?
How do you make s...
How do you make sure there are no errors in the piece of writing you just finished?
One of the things I do which seems to help a lot is to read it out loud. As I read I find typos, misspellings, words I left out, grammatical mistakes, and hanging whatevers. Hearing and seeing it at the same time seems to heighten all the senses. I will even find sentences and phrases that need to be moved around to either flow better or make better sense.
Try it, it’s a wonderful writing tool
