Sell a Headstone at Auction???
“Two grave-stones, belonging to a man in Elmira, N.Y., and already up in the burial ground over members of his family, were attached for debt, a few days since, and sold at auction. The right thus to attach stones standing in a cemetery is being tested in the courts of law in that place.” From the “Mariettian” published in Marietta, Pennsylvania on January 29, 1859. I found this while searching for something else and it would be interesting to see what ever happened in the “courts of law” in Elmira. Anybody in the Elmira area interested in looking this up? . . . and I’m really curious as to just wh
Improvements at Woodward Hill Cemetery
It’s been a stressful week with real estate doings so I took Thursday off and headed to Woodward Hill Cemetery.  The weather was in the 60’s and a perfect fall day!The first thing I noticed was somebody with a weedeater going around the monuments and headstones.  See him at the top of the hill?  Tiny little figure in front of the red tree?  That is something not usually seen there ~ a lone figure working!  Usually there are g

We knew that Princess had a tour that “stopped” at the cemetery, but since
Final Chapter; Honoring Cpl. Ben F. McEvoy, Pennsylvania State Trooper
9:30 AM comes pretty early on any Monday morning, but for some reason it didn’t seem that early on this particular day.  This was the day a lot of people have been anticipating.   This was the day the Cpl McEvoy was finally going to have a stone to mark his final resting place! Jim and I arrived at Woodward Hill Cemetery about 9:15 and found that people were assembling.  Chairs were set up for the family in front of the gravesite, chairs for the dignitaries next to the gravesite, State Troopers were lining up, Bagpipers were assembling and cameras were being focused by a TV station and the State Trooper Organization.  It was busyness with family greeting one a
