Closer Reading of John 20:11-18
Narrative Analysis
Isolate the Unit:
John 20:11-18 consists of the story of Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene at the tomb. This event takes place between Mary, Peter and the other disciple finding the tomb empty and Jesus appearing unto other of the disciples standing there in their midst.
Setting and Characters:
The primary characters in this event are Mary Magdalene and Jesus. Two angels make an appearance at the beginning of the pericope.
The setting takes place on the third day after the Crucifixion at the Tomb of Joseph of Arimathea which had been used to bury Jesus.

Contemplation is liturgical, if we understand liturgy in its fullest sense. In practice, the liturgy brought about in the community’s service of worship can bring to our attention only a tiny part of God’s word in holy scripture. Even the Liturgy of the Hours, the breviary, encompassing as it does the annual calendar of feasts, cannot contain the whole of scripture. Thus the liturgy points beyond itself to our personal contemplation of the word.

Closer Reading of John 2:13-22
Narrative Analysis:
Isolate Unit:
John 2:13-22 consists of the story of Jesus‘ Cleansing of the Temple. This story in John takes place after Jesus performs the miracle of turning water into wine earlier in the chapter. Afterward, Jesus is seen in chapter 3 telling Nicodemus that in order to even see the kingdom of heaven, one must be born again.
Setting and Characters:
Jesus has entered Jerusalem during the time of Passover and is at the Temple which is extremely crowded especially during this feast.
