My Apology to My Dad
I remember when I was a kid, about the age of thirteen, my parents bought a piece of property on which to build our new house. This land was woods. I mean Red oak, White oak, Maple. Woods. And not just woods. Woods on a steep hill, the top of which was where the house would be built. My parents decided we would clear the lot ourselves. There were, I think, seven of us kids at the time, plus Mom and Dad. So lots of laborers. It was late spring, so after school every day we climbed from the school bus into the van and went over to what we, oh so affectionately, called "The Lot". I love the month of November. The weather is perfect: not too cold, not too hot, not too humid, with the occasional snow flurry to make everything pretty.Thanksgiving happens in November. This year we are celebrating at my mom's house. Sam actually managed to get the day off from the firehouse, so he'll be joining us! Because he will be home we get to participate in the Adopt-a-Sailor program. We fill out the application and on Thanksgiving day go down to the Subase to pick up the sailors who want to join us for the festivities. We have had as few as one and as many as five come in the past years! The other wonderful thing about November? Eve
