| Description: |
Oshawa city council has voted to implement the general vote for future city elections. This is a system not used in any large city in Canada and requires municipal political parties to work. These are illegal in Ontario Municipal Law. Oshawa's system will rob neighbourhoods of their guaranteed representation on city council, will make city council less democratic, inclusive, representative, and responsive and eventually all political power will reside in only the richer areas of the city leaving vast parts unrepresented and forgotten. The only beneficiaries of the new system will be the incumbent politicians who will be guaranteed higher salaries and re-election until their death or resignation providing an aging, less energetic council devoid of new faces and new ideas. The city and its people will not be better served by the general vote. If it was better, wouldn't it be used everywhere? City voters have to remove self-serving politicians Mayor Gray and Councillors Pidwerbecki, Kolodzie, Parkes, Henry, Sholdra, and Marimpietri all who voted to serve themselves rather than the people they are supposed to serve. |

As an Oshawa taxpayer and presumably a municipal voter, you may recall the referendum in the 2006 municipal election regarding the choice to continue with the ward system or change to the general vote system in electing our councillors. It was worded in such a way that if you wanted to retain the ward system you had to vote "no" to the question.
It was clever on the part of councillors who wanted the general vote system and it worke
