Ego

I have begun a  spiritual journey, one which will require a huge change in my way of thinking, behaving and perceptions. My goal is not to change the world, but change how I see the world. The first step is my ego. Richard Rohr in his insightful book, The Naked Now, equates ego with the need to be r

Oh Ye of Little Faith

In last week's post I mentioned finally figuring out why I worry. For the most part I have managed to let go of that vice, and as a resslt, I spend more time in the now, trading the desire to be in some future or past moment, for this moment. And God blessed my new attitude while sitting at a stop l

I've Figure It Out

Worry. It is relentless, moving through my life like a raging storm, devouring every thing in its path, leaving horrendous devastation behind. I think I finally figured out why I continue to feed its voracious appetite  - control.Somewhere during the course of my life I picked up two damaging ideas.

The Lottery Ticket

Years ago, when my kids were young, my husband was laid off from the job he held for eighteen years. His unemployment and my part time job were not enough to provide for all of our needs and financial obligations. The financial wolves were circling and looked as though they would get in and destroy

And Then Came a Lion

There have been a lot of references to lions in my devotions, once again. The most thought provoking was from 1 Samuel 17:34: And then came a lion.  When King David was just a boy tending his father's sheep, he fought off many wild animals, including a lion. David saw them as opportunities to trust

Easter Will Never Be the Same

I watched the movie, The Passion, for the first time this week. I had been warned it was brutal and was prepared for the graphic content. The viciousness with which Jesus was tortured was well portrayed by the actors. They laughed at His  agony, obviously getting great pleasure from His suffering. T

It Happened On Easter

After years of exposure through the flower shop, I became extremely allergic to Easter Lilies.  My eyes watered, my skin broke out in hives, and breathing became difficult. Even walking past them in the grocery store elicited a reaction. Easter Sunday would be a huge challenge as my church would be

Plan B

As a former florist, I assisted with thousands of wedding plans. Three brides still I hold a special place in my heart.   The first called the shop on a quiet mid-week afternoon.  The young woman asked if was possible to have a wedding bouquet in an hour. "If you choose a simple style and flowers I

Life Lessons from a Doggie Door

Scout's troubles began with a roll in the soft green grass of our backyard. What should have been  safe was actually extremely dangerous. Hidden in somewhere that lush green carpet was a life threatening menace. The issue first became apparent with a large swelling on the right side of Scout's neck.

Still on the Hook

It seems I have yet to fully grasp ( or maybe fully embrace) the commandment to love my enemies. References to this directive abounded everywhere I looked this last week. They were in my devotionals, on the Internet, even in the historical novel I am reading, constant reminders to be patient, kind,
