Flowing water & autumn windfalls: Todoroki Ravine, Tokyo
Todoroki Ravine in Setagaya-ku is a gorgeous little oasis in the middle of Tokyo. Just five miles from our flat, it was a real discovery for me earlie this week. I knew of it, bit had never been. It's the scene for our Japanorama photowalk this coming weekend, 27th/28th November. Details on the Japanorama website soon. I had no tripod with me and this river didnt really afford the best view from ground-level [which is what I was left with, as I ended up resting the camera on the bridge, lens propped-up with a packet of Marlboro] for a slow-exposure with silky water effect.
Autumn scrapes the sky; Shinjuku, Tokyo
Shot a week or two ago whilst out in Shinjuku with Katie, one of my students. I liked the combination of nature and man-made structures. Nikon D300 Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 Ai @ f/1.2
The Walk to the Office; Tokyo Station, Japan
I was down at Tokyo Station the other day with Sarah, one of my photography students. This happened very quickly across the platform from us and I managed to just about get it. Background is a bit busy but it sorta works OK. More about capturing the moment than anything else. Nikon D300 Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 Ai @ f/4 1600ISO black and white in-camera
Insect Love-Hotel: Keihin Canal, Tokyo
Had a meeting with some people at a magazine, near Shinagawa, then headed home via the Old Tokkaido Road. Had taken out the extension-tubes with the intention of shooting some macro. Got some nice shots in a shrine and cemetary near Aoyomono-yokocho but these insect shots on the banks of the Keihin Canal at Samezu sort of took the prize for the day. Also took the prize for being the most difficult shot I have taken in a while: 1. Extension tubes on the 85 reduce dof to about 2mm at f/5.6 2. I had no tripod 3. The wind was intermittently blowin
Red Bridge Over the Todoroki Ravine; Setagaya-ku, Tokyo
Was out the other day, scouting around for locations for future photowalks and fashion shoots. The Todoroki Valley was somewhere I'd wanted to explore for a while and, whilst it's only five miles from my house, had never been. The weather this coming weekend sadly looks set to be awful. But this location will definitely be one for a photwalk as soon as the weather perks up on the weekend. Nikon D300 Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 @ f/6.3 7-shot bracketed HDR, merged in Photomatix.
