Work Faster & Cheaper
Two posts ago I mentioned that building the Divinity School took a long time. Meaning that it also cost a lot of money. To make things move along and to cut on cost, the architect was made to look for solutions. So they cut down on the chisel work. In the fist two photos of the windows, you can see clearly in the top one that the bottom of the middle row of windows mirrors the top: the spade shape. In the second photo you can see how they cut down on the complexity by eliminating the copy spade shape en just letting it end in a straight V-shape.
Ceiling of the Divinity School
The ceiling of the divinity school gives you an idea why it took so long to realize. And make no mistake: this is all chisel work. The coats of arms are those of the kind benefactors to the school.
Divinity School
When you visit the Bodlean Library, you go in through the Divinity School, well worth a visit. Work on the Divinity School started in 1424, but this modest teaching room was only taken into use in 1470. The construction of it took that long. This space was mainly used for examination. Oral examinations were very democratic in those days, you were examined in the presence of your fellow students, so there was a form of social control.Harr

I missed the time to finish more photos from my Oxford trip. But I promise I will continue, as a lof of my visitors have been asking for more. In the mean time I'd like to offer you this great action by Angela Castillo during the badminton interclubs of a week ago. Veel bezoekers hebben om meer gevraagd. Intuss
Radcliffe Camera
The view on the Radcliffe Camera I showed you yesterday was obstructed by a tree. Here is is, then. This buiding finished in 1749 is the science library. It is close the monumental Bodleian Library and is in fact connected to it by an underground tunnel. This permits secure transport of books. The Bodleian Library is a copyright library receiving up to 2.500 books per week. The area underground between the Radcliffe Camera and the Bodleian Library is book storage. Books are transported to the reading rooms on demand.
