In America
Tuesday morning, at a completely ungodly hour (3:30am) we woke up the kids so we could catch our 6:20am flight to London to begin 24+ hours of travel to California. 3 flights, 2 adults, 2 kids, but we all made it, albeit Robert peeled off in Houston to fly to New Orleans for a week of conferences. Our kids are becoming quite the experienced flyers, which is really nice. Except for one minor meltdown at the end of our transatlantic leg (Kaia), they did great. We flew Continental and the stewerdesses were GREAT. Without asking us, they moved passengers around to give us a block of 6 seats to ourselves so the kids had room to stretch out and sleep. They let Cade hang out with the
Bonfire Night
Remember, remember the 5th of November…
Ever since we moved to Durham we’ve thought it was super cool that every year the Brits throw a big party in honor of Robert’s birthday. I mean, they hardly even knew him and yet ever year on Nov 5th they have a huge bonfire and fireworks display. A few of them mention something about Guy Fawkes, but really, we know it’s all for Robert right?
We actually hadn’t yet made it to the party for various reasons, but seeing as A.) it’s our last year here and B.) we live in walking distance and don’t have to mess with parking and ho
Happy Halloween!
Although Halloween is not nearly as a big a deal here in England as it is at home, Cade had been looking forward to it for months! (I think it’s the combination of a new costume and CANDY!) Anyways, we took the kids trick or treating at Keenan House where lots of international grad students live and then to their Halloween party afterwards. Here’s our little GI Joe

I don’t want to go to heaven yet!
About a week ago, we had a party for all the old Durham Phd expats to meet all the new Durham Phd expats. There were about 55+ people coming and among them were about 5 boys Cade’s age. I knew he’d be so excited that a couple friends would be coming along with some new friends to make, so I was explaining to him how much fun he was going to have. He looked so excited and happy until I said “You’ll be in heaven!” Immediately his face fell and he looked back up at me with his big brown eyes and said sadly, “I’m going to be in heaven? Am I going to die soon?”
It would have been so funny if it hadn’t been so sad!
Storyteller Kaia
The other day Kaia told Robert and I a story.
Kaia: One ponce a time (that’s Kaia for “once upon a time”), there was a princess and a dinosaur. Blah Blah Blah. The End.
Exchange those “blah blah blahs” for “yada yada yada” and she could have been on Seinfeld.
