Last night, VH1 aired its annual Hip Hop Honors paying homage to the 25th year of Def Jam Recordings. Since I have a discriminating fondness for old school, shows like this always get me excited because they remind me of a time when life was easy, breezy and worry free. I bobbed my head as the Roots performed a fierce rendition of LL Cool J’s Rock the Bells and literally jumped off the couch when Public Enemy took the stage with the classic Rebel without a Pause! Just a little over 3 months since the untimely death of the late great Michael Jackson and a new track has hit the airwaves. The song, entitled “This is it” was officially released this morning via the web and radio, and will be featured in the closing sequence of the upcoming documentary by the same name. Though the track is definitely Michael Jackson(esque) with his signature vocal style and a mid tempo beat, it sounds like something I’ve heard before, especially with his brother’s background vocals giving it that old familiar Jackson 5 doowop sound.
