Stopping to Smell the Roses
Bridge of the Americas (Puente de las Américas)
You know the aphorism, “I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it?” Well, of all the bridges I’ve crossed, one of the most memorable ones I’ve crossed a number of times was the magnificent and historical Bridge of the Americas that crosses the Pacific approach to the Panama Canal at Balboa.
Completed in 1962 by the United States, the bridge was
iPod, Therefore I Am
iPod, Therefore I Am.
Without question, the way that I listen to music has been dramatically affected by Apple’s iPod and iTunes. It was over 35 years ago when I first went mobile with my music with a Panasonic personal stereo followed by a number of Sony Walkmans until I went to the Mp3 route back in 2004 when I bought my first iPod.
I blog, therefore I am
Do you remember the first time you heard the word “blog?” If you are the kind of person that is not too computer savvy like myself, you probably scratched your head and wondered, “what the heck is a blog?”
I’ve been blogging for five years now after having a website which, for all practical purposes was a “blog” when I started it in 2002 documenting my life in Korea, travels around Asia, and writing for an English-language newspaper in Korea. And once I did find out what a blog was that’s when I decided to go the route of blogging instead of running my own website.
There are many ways that one could look at the benefits and advantages of blogging
Kunu-ri
This poem is dedicated to the memory of the men from the US Second Infantry Division who lost their lives during the Battle of the Chongchon sometimes called the Battle of Kunu-ri and The Gauntlet at the end of November 1950. More than 4,900 men perished on those bleak cold hills and in those treacherous valleys in North Korea.
Kunu-ri
When the cold winds sweep down from the North
and temperatures plummet beneath a gray sky,
I think about all you men forced into harms way
on the hills and in the valleys of North Korea
in that cruel and tragic November 60 years ago.
Thanksgiving with the gang from Cheers
One of my favorite sitcoms back in the 80s and early 90s was NBC’s Cheers. I liked the ensemble cast and writing and it was a fun show to watch whether it was the ongoing love spats between Sam Malone (Ted Danson) and Diane Chambers (Shelley Long), Carla Tortelli’s (Rhea Pearlman) acerbic wit and disdain for Diane or those lovable barflys Norm Peterson (George Wendt) and Cliff Claven (John Ratzenberger) debating life’s foibles and troubles.
