Providing Liberal coverage of the politics of crime and the crime in politics since 2000.
This blog was created in 2002 by criminal defense attorney Jeralyn Merritt. We have two additional featured writers, Big Tent Democrat, Armando Llorens, who says he's a centrist, and T.Christopher Kelley, who like me, is far more to the left than a centrist. All three of us are lawyers, and we write about politics and injustice as well as the political ramifications on crime issues. We also care about the war in Iraq, elections and social and other injustices. |

Bill Clinton's Transformative Change Vs. Barack Obama's Incremental Change
The Village Blogs have adopted Jacob Weisberg's clarion pom poms in arguing that President Obama is having the most transformative first year any Democrat has had since FDR. This strikes me as a ludicrous claim. Chris Bowers discusses Nathan Newman's much more reasonable claim that President Obama has achieved small progressive victories. Chris makes the salient point that Newman's list of achievements
Afghanistan Is Not Iraq
Glenn Greenwald writes: In order to prepare Americans for Obama's Afghanistan escalation speech tonight at West Point (at least he's not wearing a fighter pilot costume), White House officials have been dispatched to speak to the media (anonymously, of course) to preview all of the new and exciting aspects of the President's plan. [. . .] [A]nyone with a memory that extends back for more than a few weeks, all of this seems anything but new. In December, 2007, George Bush delivered a speech to the nation announcing his escalation in Iraq -- that one only 20,000 troops, com
Tuesday Morning Open Thread
The big crime in the news story for the day is the arrest of Florida Gator defensive star Carlos Dunlap on a DUI charge: Florida defensive end Carlos Dunlap was arrested at around 3:30 a.m. for driving under the influence after falling asleep at the wheel. Police found Dunlap, 20 -- a key part of Florida's national title push this week against Alabama -- slumped over in his 2000 Chrysler at a complete stop through multiple green-light traffic cycles at the 200 block of Southwest 34th Street, according to the police report. Officers reach
It's Time to Vote
The Third Annual ABA Jornal Blawg 100 nominations are out. Voting has begun. TalkLeft has made it again, no small feat since 40 of the 100 are new this year and some past winners were dropped. The A-team at TalkLeft: The Politics of Crime—Jeralyn Merritt of Denver, T. Christopher Kelly of Madison, Wis., and Armando Llorens of San Juan, Puerto Rico—take a shamelessly
Free Traders For Keynes
Drum writes: [I]f free traders really want to keep protectionist sentiment tamped down, they'd be well advised to start supporting domestic policies that create jobs, bring down unemployment, and reduce the kind of financial fear that drives protectonist sentiment in the first place. Let me see - free trader? Check. Supported domestic policies to bring down unemployment? Check. I got this covered since, oh September 2008. President Obama? Not so much. Though he was a "fair trader" for a couple of weeks in Ohio. Uh oh. No pom poms. Speaking for me only
