Welcome to Texas Conservative: a blog dedicated to the cause of liberty, free markets and free people.
The primary topics discussed at Texas Conservative will be economics and politics. Although most of the discussion here will tend toward national issues, I am a proud Houstonian and will therefore post often on topics of state and local interest.
Politically, I identify myself as a conservative, in the tradition of the American Old Right. In the earlier part of the 20th century I would have been labeled a classical liberal. The one label I will not accept is neoconservative.
I believe that the Republican Party has lost its way, and that the so-called leaders of the party - at all levels - are leading us down a path to complete irrelevance. As such, one of my primary goals with this blog is to reach out to disaffected Republicans and self-identified conservatives, and to help those people rediscover true conservatism, which is based on free market capitalism, limited Constitutional government, and individual freedom. |

The handful of regular readers of this blog have probably noticed that I haven’t posted much in the last two weeks. Trust me, it’s not because of a lack of subject material. This country is sliding down the slippery slope to socialism at a pace not seen in four generations. Even worse than that is the news today that the current Thief-in-Chief is planning to escalate operations in Afghanistan - an illegal, undeclared war with no objective goals and a mounting body count. There is a lot going on in Houston, Texas, the US and the world.
What I’ve discovered over the last three months is that authoring a daily blog is really hard work. If you don’t p
FCC to violate property rights
From the Wall Street Journal:
The head of the Federal Communications Commission will propose new rules to prevent Internet providers from selectively blocking or slowing Web traffic, a move that could set off a battle with phone and cable companies that don’t want the government telling them how to run their networks.
In a speech Monday, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is expected to outline proposals for new rules that would require Internet providers to treat all legal Web traffic equally, according to people familiar with the proposal. The
Respect the Office?
I was sitting in a meeting at work on Tuesday when discussion turned to Obama’s then-upcoming address to the nation’s captive youth. Not wanting the discussion to get dragged down into a left-vs-right shouting match, somebody interjected: “You may not agree with the man, but you should at least respect the office of President.”
In my opinion, that is simply garbage. I respect people that represent the values that I believe in: liberty, property, free markets, individualism, peace, and limited government.
This idea that I should somehow show respect to a politician that is tryin
Obama proposes a sin tax on soda
The federal government’s modus operandi is to do whatever it can to benefit the government and the dastardly, evil politicians running it. Thus it should come as no surprise that the current Thief-in-Chief has proposed yet another way to steal money from the people. From the NY Daily News (via Drudge):
The President, in an interview with Men’s Health magazine released yesterday, said he thought taxing soda and other sugary drinks is worth putting on the table as Congress debates health care
Obama’s speech to students
President Obama gave his much-anticipated speech to the nation’s schoolchildren today. The speech itself was rather benign in most respects. The Administration fortunately revised it’s original lesson plan, which featured such Orwellian gems as, “Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us?”
Still, I wish that this entire incident would serve as a wake-up call to conservatives who have been up in arms over the last week, worried about government indo
