An Introduction to Dutch
I had never heard the Dutch language before today and I’m not sure that I heard it in my right mind today. I was exhausted and practically loony (I lacked the strength to even pretend to gracefully lift my bags off the carousel) but somehow managed to be amazed, through the stupor, at the Dutch language. It’s a strange combination (and this is not an attempt to analyze the language in any way other than comical and through a haze) of German and Slavic languages and the flight attendant’s voice (he was a native Dutchman) was absolutely enchanting!… Until I heard about twelve “k” sounds in quick succession. Success! Well, partially anyway! My Scottish adventure really began this (which is actually yesterday) morning when I dragged my suspiciously-heavier-than-I-remembered suitcases through the automated process and amazingly enough the heaviest one weighed exactly fifty lbs! I gave myself a pat on the back for managing to distribute my required dictionaries just so before diving into the muck of international travel. I had expected to travel about 18 hours, but then expectations should never be applied to travel…
