The news of his and Nobuko’s rescue by USS George Bush had flashed around the world. Reporters had besieged the pair by satellite telephone even before they arrived off the coast of what was once San Diego.

Onboard the USS Ronald Reagan, Eileen scanned the crowd. Men, women and children, wet and dry, huddled in blankets, their eyes glued to a mounted screen installed in front of a dining hall. But on the deck and in the air, helicopters continued their frantic operations. News blasted out from international agencies.

The sound of temple bells alternated between loud and soft in the distance. Outside Sakura, Nobuko battled along with Byron and Wulfstein to higher ground, joining another crowd. The rain had stopped, but Mount Fuji was spewing fountains of burning rocks and brightening the sky like fireworks. The heated lava and rocks slammed into the mountainsides and tore its slopes.

When Byron, Nobuko and Wulfstein reached Sakura, the wind had intensified, knocking down trees. Inside, the villa creaked; the walls rattled and the lamps swayed. He grabbed Nobuko’s hand, squeezed it and ran to the window. As the wind howled, columns of red ash, smoke and rocks spewed skyward. A blitz of flares burst in quick succession.
