It's almost 2010, can we please keep our health care rooted in science instead of magic?
Rumour has it that the Ontario government is about to permit naturopaths to write prescriptions. If you're not familiar with naturopathy, it's a branch of magical healing where the healer believes that they can control the magical healing forces of nature to bring about physical change in the patient. Naturopathy is often associated with discredited practices such as homeopathy (the giving of pure water to treat any symptom), colon cleansing, iridology, and colour therapy. Read about this travesty-to-be here at Skeptic North. Let's hope they don't kill too many people.
Should I have had to mortgage the house?
Right now, in the USA, there is a big debate going on about whether or not it is time to bring some level of socialized medicine to that country. On one side of the debate are the more liberally inclined folk who believe that people shouldn't die in the street or lose their life savings because of an illness. On the other side are people who believe that you should be planning ahead and paying for any illnesses out of pocket.
The answer to the question on everyone's mind...

I've spent the weekend in St. Catharines, with my side of the family. We have a big Hallowe'en party put on by my youngest brother - it's a truly excellent affair. But what makes it really special, is that you'll never hear anyone droning on about the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite the geographic proximity to Toronto, everyone around here seems to be fans of the Montreal Canadians or Buffalo Sabres. That makes the hockey conversation so different than it is in Ottawa.
