Blog Name: The Sunshine State, Culturally, Speaking!
Url: http://mimisculturalgems.blogspot.com/
Language: English
Topics: culture, Florida, museums
Description: "As a transplanted New Yorker now enjoying the life and times of a Floridian, I get tired of hearing all the negative stereotypes of Florida from friends and family in the proverbial "old country". For instance, "Florida=Disney", "Florida=Old People", "Florida=Hot Hot Hot" (well, that one might be true!). There's so much more...including a rich and varied cultural life to enjoy. My focus here is on such cultural activities, as seen through the eyes of the casual observer." NOTE: The original name of this blog was "Mimi's Floridian Cultural Gems." Although the name has been changed to "The Sunshine State, Culturally Speaking", the blog remains the same.

Picasso, Canines & Quilts
Last time you found me here babbling about Floridian culture and arts, was back on 11/17 when I was very excited about visiting "Rooted in Tradition: Art Quilts from the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum" and "Sew It's Art: Best of Pinellas County Quilts" at the Florida International Museum in St. Petersburg. Well, here I am again, still carrying on about these amazing quilts."These aren't quilts? Where are the real quilts?"...TQ from at least one of my students. Which to me was a positive sign because it meant that this museum visit challenged some preconceived notion of the quilt as an art form, forcing to see the quilt as an evolving form of expression rather than in the traditi
Hurray for Quilts!
My quilting experiences of bygone days were always very personal and, in a sense, familial and/or communal ... a memory quilt for my mom, a family handprint quilt for my grandma's 90th birthday, a charity quilt to raise money for English Bulldog rescue. So quilts as an art form really speaks to me. That's why I am so looking forward to visiting "Rooted in Tradition: Art Quilts from the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum" and "Sew It's Art: Best of Pinellas County Quilts" at the Florida International Museum in St. Petersburg with my students tomorrow. The following youtube promo video, hosted by assistant curator, Christine Renc-Carter.This exhibit will be on display until

An Official Song of Tampa? Frank Garcia Rocks!
Tampa is chock full of local culture that extends way beyond 2001 Nude Odyssey and Mons Venus down on Dale Mabry Highway! It all began back in 1513 when Mr. Fountain-of-Youth himself, Ponce de Leon, first arrived in the Tampa Bay area at that time. Although the Spaniards lost interest in this part of the State back in the day, in 1824 four companies of the United States Army established Fort Brooke to protect the strategic harbor of Tampa Bay.Then enter the Cubans who established the thriving cigar industry and, subsequently, the vibrant & ethnically diverse Ybor City. This Hispanic heritage was celebrated when when Mayor Pam Iorio
New York in Tampa...Art as Communal Healing
Wait, where are we? Or better yet, WHEN are we??Actually, tonight I drafted my family to walk with me in the "Light the Night Walk", to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Here in Tampa, that meant a 1.5 mile walk around George M. Steinbrenner Field, the Spring training home of the 27-
