the novel & well-worn; adventures in West Cork
I am a woefully negligent blogger. This little cyber space was carved out so I could share the myriad new experiences, from the banal to the novel, that I expected would be mine when moving to another country. Indeed, I have had and continue to have such experiences. Regretfully, I also find that

Nesting Excitement!!
We have a very tall pine in our front garden. Ravens, or at least one raven, often perch high up in that tree and make their distinctive calls. A few weeks ago I witnessed a territorial battle over the tree but was unsure whether it was crows or ravens because I didn’t get a good [...]

the West Wind
Spring, I believe, is here at last! The grass is high and dotted with daisy, dandelion, and primrose. We had a roaring storm from the west last night. Lashing rain and strong winds buffeted our stone house. The sound was soothing, and simultaneously enlivening! Today the winds remain strong, but

return of the sun and with it, hope
The sun has made a comeback! It’s amazing how a little sunlight shifts mood and increases energy. Seriously, I am from Texas…home to perpetual sunshine. I have never experienced the gloomy short days of winter and the very REAL physiological symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder. SO Glad the s

a Hawk came to dinner
A beautiful hawk (not sure the type) perched briefly in our pine yesterday afternoon, eyeing the bird feeder. With the abundant variety of birds visiting the feeders (and those drawn to observe that abundance) I need a good book to help me identify them!

Cork French Film Festival
I watched two great films today as part of the French film Fest: Land of Milk & Honey and Indignados. The first was a critical look at consumer society circa 1969 France. Brilliantly done, the portrayal was raw and gritty. The second was a look at the activism and unrest that evolved into the global

birds….{feeders and conferences}
There was a true Conference of the Birds in our front garden this morning! We bought a couple of feeders last week, filling a few with peanuts and a few with mixed seed. There is a little tree in the front garden that kept its leaves all winter (it reminds me of eucalyptus, not that [...]
