Florence: Medici Murder in the Duomo
The cathedral was crowded the Sunday morning of April 26, 1478. The Pazzi conspirators anxiously awaited the signal. When the sacristy bell sounded and the priest elevated the Host hundreds of heads bowed down in devotion. Guiliano de’Medici dutifully lowered his head too. Suddenly and without warning he was stabbed repeatedly in the back by the swords of his rivals, Francesco de’Pazzi and Bernardo Bandino. Giuliano fell to the cathedral floor, his crimson blood flowing from nineteen fatal wounds.
