Description: By Thomas Whittingslow Could the social network of Twitter be the manifestation of the “Noospher” or the global web of consciousness as predicted French philosopher Teilhard de Chardin — or is it simply a tedious repetition of human banalities? Chardin believed that, from the dawn of mankind, we have advanced upward in both consciousness and social organization toward a higher degree of existence, culminating in a global consciousness or a “super consciousness.” “Noosphere” comes from the Greek word nous or mind and sphaira, meaning sphere. According to Chardin, “The coalescence of human elements, the spherical geometry of the earth and the physical curvature of the mind, harmonize to counterbalance individual and collective forces of dispersion in the world.” The global reaction to the recent Iranian crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations of dissidents protesting the credibility of the election of Mahmud Armandinejad a prime example. On Saturday June 21st in Teheran a 16-year-old protester named Neda, died, apparently, shot by police. Prophetically, in English her name means “the voice.”The incident was captured by a cell phone camera, and uploaded to the Web and for two day it’s one of the most viewed item in the world. “Tweets” from observers on the scene in Iran spread around the world in minutes, faster than the news stream of CNN or Sky News, and so did global consciousness of a repressive, backward regime. People in Beverly Hills and Kuala Lampur could see Neda’s last breath and feel the outrage of the Iranian women in real time. The only way for the Armandinejad and Ayatollah Khomeini to stop it would be to shut down the internet and all phones in the country. Every moment we are living the consciousness of the universe, being fed by our senses, our eyes and ears. Could Twitter become the major global political force, collectively linking the individual consciousness of people around the world, weaving a giant web of consciousness? If so, it could be democracy in its purest form. Biological evolution has been replaced by psycho social evolution. Woe be to the Supreme Leader who ignores Twitter. -End-
