Madrid Restaurant in Lakeview
Madrid Restaurant
300 Harrison Ave
New Orleans, LA 70124-3126

I sort of made a mistake when choosing this small Lakeview restaurant. Since our vacation to DC this summer, I've managed to convince the family that tapas restaurants are a fun (and tasty) experience. I drive by Madrid a good bit in the back-and-forth from Metairie to Gentilly, and I assumed that it was a tapas place. While it's a solid Spanish restaurant, it's not a typical tapas menu with a dozen or more small plates from which to choose. The five or so tapas listed are true starters, lead-ins to traditional mains.
Basics: Asparagus
Asparagus are one of my favorites. I usually blanch them in boiling water for 8 minutes, then either serve them with a sauce or work them into a dish.
Zuppardo's Supermarket (my grocery of choice) had these nice, thick ones this week.
Using a tip from the original Frugal Gourmet cookbook, cut the bottom inch or so of the stalks off. This is the really tough part.

Bud's Broiler Poster by H. Eric Hartman
(x-posted to YatPundit and ebranley.com)
We all encounter things that "speak" to us. Things that, when our senses encounter them, we are immediately transported to a different place and time. Sometimes we're transported to places not of this earth. Just as the music of Renard Poche takes me to a place and time very special to me, the artwork of H. Eric Hartman often does the same. Combine the return after the storm of one of my favorite places to eat in New Orleans (Bud's Broiler on City Park Avenue) with Eric's talent and, well, you get the painting above
Seither's Seafood on Hickory in Harahan
Seither's Seafood279 Hickory AveHarahan, LA 70123
My wife and some of her co-workers went to Seither's a while back, and all she could do was rave about the place, so we went there with the kiddo for dinner. Seither's is a classic New Orleans family-run restaurant. Their specialties are boiled/fried seasonal seafood. In fact, it looks like the place started life as a seafood shop/store, and was expanded to include the restaurant over time.
